Sanada Kozou is a side character first introduced in the Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse anime. He is also featured in Teito Moyu, and made a brief appearance in the visual novel.

The little that was seen of his personality would suggest that he is a strict person on the outside; however, he also genuinely believes in nurturing the pilot cadets under him, and is fair to all the cadets under him.

Total Eclipse[edit | edit source]

A middle-aged Royal Guard drill instructor for Takamura Yui's cadet class, his mannerisms towards his cadets are much like a typical drill instructor. When the BETA Invasion of Japan began, he put in a request to be transferred to the Imperial Army, and returned to the battlefield with the rank of Captain. It is likely that Kouzou was actually an Imperial Army pilot attached to the Royal Guard, as he was never seen in a Royal Guard uniform, and pilots a Type-94-1C in combat instead of a Type-82.

He is often seen wearing an eyepatch over his right eye, which is a different color from his left. The reason is unknown, and can range from heterochromia to a prosthetic eye.

Kozou's combat achievements are unknown, but throughout the battles fought during the BETA Invasion of Japan in 1998, he was said to be fairly skilled as a pilot in the Imperial Army. He later met Yui Takamura again during the Fall of Kyoto; already bleeding out from a prior injury, he chose to die in a last stand against an oncoming BETA horde, buying time for 2nd Lieutenants Yui, Yamashiro Kazusa and Noto Izumi to make their escape. His actions would leave an impression on the young Yui, who would use his standards as a benchmark to judge the level of her skills.[1]
