Amemiya Mariko (雨宮 まりこ) is a First Lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Royal Guard, with her Imperial Court rank being a hereditary vassal to the Shogun. She is the second in command of Takamura Yui's White Fang squadron—White Fang 2—and a close friend of hers. Amemiya is older than Yui and could be considered a calming influence.

She took part in BETA clearing operations with the Royal Guard 3rd Battalion piloting a Zuikaku Type-82F in May 2000, and later participates in trial Type-99 Electromagnetic Launcher simulations as a Type-94 Shiranui test pilot.

Total Eclipse[]

Amemiya was born the daughter of one of the fudai households (hereditary Shogun vassals) sometime in the 1980's. Given her status, Amemiya was destined to serve in the Imperial Royal Guard, and so when she came of age she became one of the many girls to enroll in specialized academic institutes dedicated to training Eishi, specifically those of samurai families.

At some point prior to 1998, Amemiya graduated and was gifted a Type-82F Zuikaku, appropriate to her status. She participated in the defense of Japan during the BETA invasion in 1998. Later, she became acquainted with Takamura Yui as they were assigned to the same squadron, White Fang, in the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Guard, with Yui being her flight leader alongside two other non-vassal samurai eishi. With Yui, she took part in BETA clearing operations at Miho Bay and witnessed the heroic sacrifice of Takatsukasa Kyoko and the 3rd and 6th IRG companies, who protected panicking and retreating Army units from advancing BETA.

Later in 2001, Amemiya joined the rest of White Fang squadron when they were selected to participate in the Type-99 Electromagnetic Launcher weapon trials. During this time, she used a simulator to pilot the specially designed Type-94-1C Shiranui. In the aftermath of another failed simulator run of the "Volk 19" program, Amemiya joined Yui where they conversed over their failure to reach the reactor yet again.

Amemiya observed failures in both the Shiranui and Type-99 prototypes, both in the vulnerability of the weapon's exposed cooling systems to BETA attacks and potential system malfunction errors in the aftermath of the Type-99's charged shot. She managed to relieve some of Yui's stress with a well-timed joke, easing the tension her superior was feeling at the time.

During Yui's participation in the XFJ Program, Amemiya presumably took temporary command of White Fang squadron and continued to support Yui's work on the Type-99 weapon from Japan. She, along with the rest of the pilots in the squadron were on temporary loan to the Imperial Army for the purposes of weapon testing, and reported to iwaya Eiji, the colonel in charge of the project.

Etymology[]

  • Amemiya means "rain" (雨) (ame) and "temple, shrine, palace" (宮) (miya).
  • Mariko is written in hiragana (まりこ), which has no special meaning. However, when written in kanji (真里子), it could possibly mean "real, genuine" (真) (ma), "village" (里) (ri) and "child" (子) (ko).

Trivia[]

  • In her anime debut in Muv Luv Alternative Total Eclipse, Episode 13, Amemiya is incorrectly colored with dark blue hair (similar to Kyoko's) rather than her actual dark brown hair (similar to Yui's).
