The timeline of events in the world of Alternative diverges from the Unlimited/The Day After Timeline on October 22nd, 2001. Both timelines diverge from our own timeline of real-life historical events as early as 1867.

  • Formation of the Motosuu Government (元枢府) in Japan. The daimyos of the anti-shogunate-overthrowing faction and the families positioned to accede to the shogunate merge, establishing the restoration of imperial rule. Afterwards, the Motosuu Government, organized by the Five Regent Houses, the major samurai families of Koubuin, Ikaruga, Saionji, Kujou, and Takatsukasa, is installed. The head of the Motosuu Government - the Seii Daishogun (政威大将軍, roughly "ruling great general") - is nominated by the emperor from amongst one of the family heads of the Five Regent Houses. The capital city is switched from Edo to Kyoto, and a centralization of power is pressed forward.

  • September 1st - World War II begins. War breaks out between the Axis powers and the Allied nations.

  • December 8th - War in the Pacific breaks out. From the commencement of hostilities, to the invasion of Malaya, the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Philippines campaign, and the invasion of Hong Kong all take place.

  • World War II ends. The end of the war between the Axis powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan) and the Allies (the United States of America, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). Germany temporarily occupied most of Europe, but following the European counterattack, the United States dropped a pair of atomic bombs on Berlin, securing victory for the Allies.[1]
  • As the war ended earlier for the Empire of Japan as compared to real-life events, Operation Shō-Go 1 (the Battle of Leyte Gulf), Operation Ten-Go 1 (the Yamato's suicide mission at the Battle of Okinawa), and the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings did not take place. As the Soviets did not invade, the Sakhalin Northern Territories of the Kuril Islands remain in Imperial possession. Western culture such as the celebration of Christmas did not seep into Imperial Japanese postwar culture as deeply as it did in real life.
  • The world becomes focused around the ideological conflict manifested by the war between the two major powers, the United States and the Soviet Union, and the Cold War begins between the East and West.[1] A global framework consisting of the United Nations, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the Warsaw Pact nations is established.[1]
  • The Empire of Japan, which the Allies had re-conciliated with, avoided unconditional surrender, but were placed under substantial US control, with several policies effectively turning the former Axis nation into a vassal state of the United States.[1] The Empire of Japan is then incorporated into the world order of the Cold War immediately after the cessation of hostilities, and are promoted by the United States as their most important ally in the Far East during the post-war reconstruction.[1] As part of the postwar restructuring in Japan, power is taken from the Shogunate and granted to the elected Diet and the cabinet.

The bestest spaceship ever

(IW) The Daedalus Project, a Western bloc-administrated space technology development plan.

  • The ESA (European Space Agency) of the European nations and NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) of the United States, in great secrecy, begin work on the Daedalus Project, a plan to develop and launch an extra-solar planetary probe.[3] The project plan was later made available for participation by all Western bloc nations, and was made public in development stages named Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo, which would successively develop and put to practical use large multistage rockets, orbital return vehicles, space stations, MMUs, and other related technologies.[3]
  • Under the Daedalus Project, orbital satellites and manned flights to the Moon were promoted, the construction of large-scale orbital facilities and permanent lunar bases with an aim towards infrastructure development of the lunar surface, were promoted and achieved in stages. [4] As part of efforts to construct a permanent lunar surface base, large-scale orbital facilities were constructed, and large space-going craft were developed and deployed to establish a supply line in-between the Earth and the Moon. All these were achieved in project stages.[4]
  • With the US leading the western nations, the international moonbase, Plato-1, is completed, and the geological surveys and exploitation of raw materials on the Moon begins.[4]
  • The final extrasolar planetary exploration stage would eventually be announced to have failed due to loss of communication with the Icarus I probe.
  • While the Soviet Union and her Warsaw Pact allies initially developed similar plans and held the lead in the development race, they eventually lost the Moon race. Afterwards, most of their technology shifted to heavily emphasize on unmanned probes and low orbit deployment technology.[4]
  • The United States-Japan Security Treaty is signed. Under this treaty, the American occupation forces officially become the USFJ (United States Forces Japan), strengthening US influence in the Far East. The Empire of Japan, resigned to its situation, pushes forward in the recovery of its economy.[5]

  • In the US, approval is given for the development of a larger version of the MMU (Manned Mobile Unit) for greater efficiency, due to the delays in construction of the Icarus I unmanned deep space exploration craft.[6] The enlarged MMU is essentially a powered exoskeleton.
  • Japan enters the Prometheus Project, a subsidiary under the umbrella of the Daedalus Project, and is mainly responsible for the allotment of Icarus I orbital construction duties, material development, and debris processing.[7]

  • The US space station Hope II is used to facilitate development of Super Carbon as a structural material for probes.[8]

  • The larger-scale MMUs developed as part of the Daedalus Project are put to practical use, and are able to use their manipulators to utilize a multi-purpose knife tool made of Super Carbon,[9] presumably to facilitate large-scale material cutting during construction.

  • The Viking 1 probe reaches Mars and deploys its landing module, which transmits data images of creatures assumed to be of Martian origin. Satellite date from Viking-1 in orbit aids in confirmation of the creatures inhabiting all across the surface of Mars.[10] Communication with the landing module was lost shortly after. Subsequent probe projects by the United States and Soviet Union all failed, and information of the creatures remains rare for some time after the initial discovery. [10] This would later be recorded as the first BETA encounter.

  • Due to Viking-1's orbital trajectory, large structures were discovered across the Martian surface. The discovery sends waves across the scientific community. Because of the implication that the large structures suggested the possibility of intelligent Martian life, the special duty research organization, Dignified 12, comprised of 12 people ranging from mathematicians and linguists to other important personnel, was created for the purpose of establishing a method of cross-species communication.[11]

  • The large unmanned space probe "Icarus I", equipped with a nuclear pulse propulsion/ram scoop drive, is launched from Earth orbit. Besides collecting scientific data on deep space, its purpose is to find a planet suitable for human habitation.[12] Communication with Icarus I would later be lost.
  • Control of Project Prometheus is transferred from the Empire of Japan's NASDA (National Space Development Agency) to its newly-established Imperial Japanese Aerospace Force.[13]

  • The Imperial Japanese Aerospace Force decides to adopt the multi-purpose knife tool made from Super Carbon as auxiliary equipment for their large MMUs. The tool would later be renamed as the Type-65 PB Knife, to be used as an auxiliary weapon around the time of the F-4 Phantom's introduction.[14]

  • Dignified 12 makes their transition to the Alternative Plans, becoming a global large-scale project. (At this point, the BETA have not yet been named as such, since they have not yet proven to be hostile adversaries to the human race).[15]

When you're happy and you know it

(IW) The beginning of hell on the Lunar surface: Warrior-class BETA assault facilities on the moon.

  • The Sacrobosco Incident. While surveying the interior of the Sacrobosco Crater, a geological exploration team from the international permanent lunar base Plato-1 encounters beings identical to the lifeforms discovered on Mars, making this the first time humanity has encountered an extraterrestrial species.[16] Thereafter, contact with the team is lost, and they are never heard from again.
  • Immediately following the Sacrobosco Incident, the extraterrestrial species, in great numbers, attack numerous locations on the lunar surface. Due to that, these lifeforms are christened as the BETA: Beings of Extraterrestrial origin which is Adversary of human race, or 『人類に敵対的な地球外起源生命』 - "Extraterrestrially-Originating Life, Hostile to Mankind". The subsequent battles on the lunar surface, lasting until 1973, would later be called the First Lunar War,[17] the first contact with extraterrestrials, and also the first war against extraterrestrials, in human history.
  • Upon examining the data from the Sacrobosco Incident and the results of subsequent combat, the United States Department of Defense questions the combat effectiveness of pre-existing conventional arms. Government-sponsored fundamental research into anti-BETA space weaponry by the military-industrial complex results in many development projects in all fields, from advanced materials to electronic engineering. The four United States Armed Forces branches (Army, Navy, Air Force, and Space Corps) begin the joint development project, the NCAF-X Project, as one of these developments.[18]

  • Once it was apparent that a state of war had emerged against the extra-terrestrials, the Alternative Plan shifts to the second stage, in order to directly study the full ecology of the BETA. Thereafter, the previous stage is referred to as Alternative I, and the current stage would thereafter be referred to as Alternative II.[19]
  • The main objective of Alternative II was to find a means of communication with the BETA by studying their biology and interactions with the environment. However, completely alien forms of the BETA's organic structures and functions shocked the researchers; due to concerns for deviating from bio-ethical guidelines, Alternative II would eventually be shelved to make space for Alternative III.[19]
  • While the results gained from the enormous financial expenditure and sacrifices made to capture and study BETA were mocked as "confirming the BETA to have been carbon-based life forms, and nothing more", the discovery of an enzyme affecting the metabolism decline was considered a significant contribution to humanity's cause.[19] Nevertheless, the plan would later be widely considered a failure because of its abysmal main result.
  • As a solution to the stagnation of Alternative I in finding a method of communication with the BETA, the Soviets proposed a plan to probe the thoughts of the BETA directly with ESPers.[20] As a precaution against setbacks in Alternative II, the plan was ratified, and the Soviet Academy of Sciences begins UN-sponsored research. Research on man-made ESPers speeds up.[20]

  • The first mechanized infantry units, making use of the Hardiman Feedback Protector, are deployed on the Moon to fight the BETA.[21] The FP would later be further developed into exoskeleton equipment, and deployed amongst armies around the world as mechanized infantry equipment.[21]

  • Based on combat results in the First Lunar War, the Empire of Japan decides to begin basic research on the inclusion of the Feedback Protector as a possible domestically-produced effective anti-BETA weapon.[22]

  • The member nations of the European Community, which was previously formed along economic lines as a federation, further develop their regional organization framework into that of the European Union, which establishes a cooperative framework in-between the governments and armed forces of the European region, so as to improve their capability to wage war against the BETA.[23] At the same time, NATO forces undergo reorganization.[23]
  • The United States of America officially discloses the existence of the prototype Tactical Surface Fighter; upon the US government's disclosure, McDaell, its developer, begins marketing the prototype to allied nations.[24]
  • Japan immediately decides to adopt the new F-4 Phantom, and Japanese-required performance specifications for the manufacturer are examined. Orders are also placed for a Melee Halberd type for the exclusive use of Japanese machines.[25]

1973: The BETA land at Kashgar.

  • April 19th: The BETA invasion of Earth begins. A BETA landing unit launched from the Moon lands on Earth, in the Kashgar Autonomous Area, western China. Construction of H01 (the Original Hive) begins in the Kashgar region of western China.[26]
  • With the arrival of BETA on Earth, the United Nations Space Command treats the situation as an emergency, and declares the abandonment of the permanent lunar base Plato-1 and the complete withdrawal from all personnel from the Moon, bringing to an end 6 years of fighting on the lunar surface.[27] With the Moon left under the complete control of the BETA, the famous phrase of "The Moon was hell", spoken by UN General Campbell during his command of the lunar surface forces, would be remembered in history as the defining words of the First Lunar War.[27]
Balls of fuckin' super-carbon

  • Operation Hongqi, the Kashgar campaign against the BETA by the armed forces of the People's Republic of China, begins. Aiming to monopolize alien technology, and with the military situation in their favor, China refuses to accept the deployment of UN military forces into their nation.[28]
  • Approximately nineteen days after the initial fighting starts, the Laser-class BETA appear on the battlefield. They turn the battles into slaughters as the PLA are denied the important advantage of aerial power through use of highly accurate and long-ranged high-energy lasers, forming the most powerful and efficient air defense system ever encountered.[28] Backed into a corner, and unable to resist the sheer number of BETA while deprived of air superiority, the Chinese appealed to the Soviets for reinforcements after repeated retreats; however, it was already too late.[28] Both nations employ tactical nuclear devices in their scorched earth tactics in an attempt to halt the BETA advance, to almost no effect.[28] The BETA begin their westward push.
  • Communist Party of the Soviet Union officially declares a state of emergency. All state functions (国家の全機能) are placed under military control, and the entire civilian population is mobilized. Under these measures, most non-Russians are called to military service, their sons also being raised as soldiers in military educational institutions.
  • The BETA invasion of Earth is used as an excuse to discontinue Alternative II, which had failed to produce decisive results. The United Nations brings a reserve plan, prepared by the Soviet leadership, into the forefront of matters as Alternative III.[29] The plan involves the usage of man-made Espers; mass-production is made possible by implementing gene manipulation into the process; however, most of the Espers would later be sacrificed in Hive raids for the purposes of the plan.[29]

1974: The BETA advance sweeps through the Middle-East.

  • The UN Statistics Division announces that the world population had fallen by approximately 30% as a result of the BETA invasion of Earth.[30]
  • July 6th: A second BETA landing unit impacts at Athabasca, Saskatchewan, Canada. Making use of the lessons learned from the ongoing conflict in Eurasia, the Athabasca landing unit is destroyed by the US military through concentrated use of strategic nuclear weapons. This has the side-effect of turning half of Canada into an irradiated, uninhabitable wasteland.[31] This is later referred to as the Athabasca Incident.
Muv-Luv Alternative - Grandfather Tales-F-4A

An F-4 Phantom armed with two WS-16A Assault Cannons.

  • The US-designed-and-manufactured F-4 Phantom, the first Tactical Surface Fighter and genuine anti-BETA weapon, enters service. The CIWS-1 Close Combat Knife (which would later be re-designated as the CIWS-1A) and the WS-16A (105mm smoothbore, 20mm chaingun) Assault Cannon all enter service alongside it.[32] American forces, however, rely on the WS-16A as a primary weapon, with a pair of CIWS-1A as secondary weapons; the CIWS-2A, developed at the same time, and which would later be better known as the Japanese Type-74 PB Blade, is not included in any standard load-out for US military personnel.
  • In response to the Athabasca Incident, US Congress passes a bill to prioritize improving the anti-BETA defenses of North America. Because the supply quota of the European front was left unchanged, the priority of the Japanese supply order is lowered instead.[33] This results in the Type-74 PB Blade ordered by the Empire of Japan being delivered to them for licensed production, but their F-4 TSFs are not, leaving many Japanese military personnel fuming at the situation.[33]
  • The Strategic Defense Initiative is announced. Alarmed by the BETA landings in Kashgar and Canada, the USA declares their intention to enhance the orbital defense system to intercept BETA landing units in outer space.[35] From the fact that man-made satellites, orbiting space stations, and spacecraft are not targeted by Laser-class BETA, the establishment of an orbital satellite surveillance line, and the integration of the formerly standalone strategies of space interception, orbital interception, high-altitude interception, and ground interception, into a practical, reliable defence network, is proposed.[35] The following year, the United Nations would adopt the concept as the international defense program SHADOW, and elevate its status to a global project.
  • October: Reconnaissance by satellite reveals a ground structure similar to the one in Kashgar, in the old Iranian territory of Masshad. After further investigation confirms the presence of Gates and a Stab, it is named H02, the Mashhad Hive, confirming beyond doubt that Hives undergo branching and differenciation. Accordingly, the Kashgar Hive is designated H01.[36]
  • The USA, after analysis showed the difficulty of implementing the SDI concept alone, due to the massive number of orbital weapons required, has the UN successfully adopt the it as an international defence plan. The UN Aerospace Force and the other nations involved begin an overhaul of their low-orbit space fleet in accordance to the plan.[37]
  • The United States of America, which valued highly the results and fundamental technology research in the Prometheus Project provided by the Empire of Japan, requests for Japanese participation in the Strategic Defense Initiative. Although the Imperial Diet perceives the US' true intention to be one of economic cooperation, they declare Japan's decision to participate in the SDI, as they perceive US military power to be integral for Japan to be able to resist a BETA incursion.[37]

1975: The BETA begin their advance on the Eurasian continent.

  • A BETA group moving north along the coast of the Black Sea invades the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. Construction of H03, the Uralsk Hive, begins in Kazakhstan.[38]
  • In the face of mounting pressure by the BETA invasion, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union government relocates the state capital, from Moscow to Khabarovsk in the far east, near the border with China. Evacuation of major domestic industries and the defense industry begins.[39]
  • The HI-MAERF (HIgh-Mobility AERial Fortress) Project begins in great secrecy, with the project goal being the development of an aerial fortress capable of independent invasion of enemy territory and Hive destruction. Development of the XG-70, in which the G-Element Gray 11 is to be used in, and the dedicated escort TSF XF-108 Rapier, commences as a three-way joint project between Lockweed, North Americana, and McDaell Doglam.[40]
  • In response to the two BETA landing units that have reached Earth thus far, the UN Security Council decides to build a system to intercept them outside the Earth's atmosphere. Construction of Spaceward Hardwares for All-Round Defensive Ordnances and Warheads, SHADOW, begins, comprising three components: a lunar orbit surveillance network, an early stage nuclear launch platform at Lagrange 1, and a final interception line made up of a group of nuclear attack satellites in Earth orbit.[41]
  • Japan dissolves its Air Force and reorganizes it into the Army, Navy, and Space Force branches of the military.
  • The Soviet Union further modifies its license-produced F-4Rs by adding in cold-weather countermeasures, and making the unit more lightweight for better close-combat performance. The result, the MiG-21 Balalaika, is deployed into live combat.[42]
  • The armed forces of the People's Republic of China, using the MiG-21s supplied to them by the Soviets, proceed to further modify it into the J-8 and deploy it into live combat.[43]

1976: The Eurasian continent is split by the invasion.

  • Having achieved dominance over Eastern Europe, the BETA group moving west from Kashgar proceed further north into Soviet territory. Construction of H04 (Velsk Hive), in Arkhangelsk Oblast of the Russian SFSR, and H05 (Minsk Hive), in the Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, begin.[44]
  • To combat the worldwide shortage of TSFs, the USA encourages allied nations to develop their own TSF types, and begins accepting TSF engineering training teams from many nations.[45] Disappointed at the de-prioritization of their order of F-4 Phantoms, the Imperial Ministry of Defense, which strongly advises independent domestic development, answers with the Akebono Program, by sending a combined team of 219 personnel from both private and military enterprises to the USA for the purposes of TSF development and application of related technologies.[45]
  • As part of attempts to resolve the shortage of TSFs, the USA converts the easily mass-produced T-38 training unit into the F-5 Freedom Fighter. Europe is prioritized for the unit's export supply; Asia receives less than 30% of the total F-5 production.[46]
  • The USA first deploys the F-11 Tiger. The manufacturer, Grunnan, begins marketing it to Asian nations, that are still awaiting delivery of their supply of F-4 Phantoms, such as the Empire of Japan. A model with increased output would also be marketed towards the Japanese Royal Guard. The F-11's high-stability frame was offset by its low output, however, and it was quickly replaced in service by the F-4.[47]
  • Marketing of the F-5 Freedom Fighter and the F-11 Tiger to Japan intensifies. McDaell, fearing the cancellation of Japanese orders for the F-4 Phantom, delivers 12 units and their necessary peripheral equipment and parts as a countermeasure against that possibility, allowing the Japanese to begin live testing of the Gekishin.[48]
  • The French Army begins deployment of the F-5F manufactured by Dass-Ault, named the Mirage III according to traditions.[49]
  • Sweden, with F-5Fs supplied by France, further modifies them into the F-5S, also known as the J-35 Draken, and deploys them. The J-35 is considered of the same lineage as the F-5E, F-5F, F-5G, and F-5I, as European modifications of the F-5 Freedom Fighter; these 5 TSFs are referred to as the "Five Sisters" by military personnel.[51]
  • Israel's TSF manufacturer, IEI, , further modifies F-5Fs supplied by France with desert battle specifications. These TSFs are then deployed as the F-5F Kfir.[52]

1977: BETA continue to spread both north-east and north-west.

  • A BETA group from Kashgar reaches the southern part of the Urals and invades Soviet territory. Construction of H06 (Ekibastuz Hive) begins to the north of Lake Balkhash in Kazakhstan.[53]
  • Worldwide, nations attracted the Alternative Plans begin to move. As Alternative III had yet to show results, nations disfavoring other countries' anti-BETA strategic initiatives begin large-scale budget allocation in the field of fundamental researches in anticipating the next Alternative Plan. With aggressive research into BETA-derived technology, the USA becomes dominant in the fight to lead the Alternative Plan.[54]
  • Beginning of Alternative III's anti-BETA diversionary effectiveness experiments. Examination of anti-BETA diversionary experiments validated by Alternative III begins in earnest across all fronts in Eurasia. The result is an estimated BETA tactical information propagation model.[55] (The idea that each Hive has its own independent strategic planning functions and supporting chain of command, and that information gathered by the BETA is disseminated throughout the entire population of the Hive in nineteen days, at which point it immediately propagates to all Hives derived from the same Original Hive as the source Hive, and after which all Hives that received the information will have countermeasures based on the information gathered).
  • The tactical information propagation model is incorporated into anti-BETA strategic planning. Prior to its integration into strategic concerns, human forces were defeated in 8 out of 10 engagements during the experiments.[55]

1978: Operation Palaiologos fails to stall the BETA advance.

  • The Moonlit Night Incident occurs. An attempted coup d'etat in the DDR by dissidents led by high-ranking NVA officers.
  • Operation Palaiologos is launched in Europe. A joint operation by a combined NATO/Warsaw Pact force attempts to seize H05, the Minsk Hive. After two months of fierce fighting, with the combined forces of all of Europe acting as a diversion, the Volk Regiment of the Soviet Army 43rd Tactical Armored Division successfully enters the Minsk Hive, but is wiped out after a few hours.[58] Though the operation to seize H05 is unsuccessful, humanity obtains valuable information from their observations of the Hive interior from the data left behind by the Volk Regiment.[58] This data would hereafter be known as the Volk Data.
  • The Soviet Union is divided east and west by a massive BETA counterattack, as if in retaliation for Operation Palaiologos. Exhausted from the previous fighting, the European Front collapses entirely. The Warsaw Pact nations are cut off from the USSR and fall back to Western Europe with the NATO forces. BETA gain total control of northwest Eurasia.[59]
  • Construction of H07 (Surgut Hive) begins in Russia.[59]
  • In order to resist the BETA invasion, the Middle Eastern nations declare a holy war. The First Jihad Union Force, transcending previous sectarian divides, deploys in a simultaneous attack on multiple fronts, successfully push back the front line temporarily.[60]
  • In response to the ongoing BETA invasion, the Soviet Union moves the headquarters of Alternative III from Novosibirsk to Khabarovsk.[61]
  • First deployment of the A-10 Thunderbolt II by the USA, developed by Fairchild Republic as a heavy TSF specializing in point defense and fire support. In particular, it gains a reputation on the European front for high performance at killing Tank-class BETA, thus gaining the nickname "Tank Buster".[62]

  • Joint experiment between Dr. Karls Moorcock and Dr. Ristomatti Lechte is a success. Gravity manipulation engine mechanism is established. The Moorcock-Lechte Drive is developed at Ros Alamos.[63]
  • The concept that would later become the G-Bomb is first invented during the development process of manufacturing the Moorcock-Lechte Drive.[64] The possibility of a decisive strike on the BETA would heavily influence US strategic actions to come, and with the completion of the Moorcock-Lechte Drive, the US makes further requests to Boening and Rokswell to continue testing and development.[64]
  • The USA puts the Santa Fe Project into motion. From HI-MAERF Project participants, the "Memorandum Concerning ML Theory-Based Strategic Weapons" is submitted to President Harry O'Laughlin in utmost secrecy. The same year, a different plan to apply the ML Engine in a simpler super-critical reaction weapon commences - the beginning of the Fifth Dimensional Field Effect Bomb (also known informally as the G-Bomb) development program.
  • Due to the war situation in Eurasia and other world events related to the BETA invasion, Japan drastically revises its Fundamental Law of Education. In the interests of cultivating superior BETA-fighting pilots (Eishi), a special educational environment for the gifted and an aptitude-based selection system are set up.[65]
  • Japan ends the Akebono Program. Acquisition of fundamental technology related to the development and operation of 1st generation Tactical Surface Fighters is complete.[66]
  • The issue of a shortage of TSFs on the front-lines begin to end, as the technical acquisitions of the other nations progress on to domestic production. The United States Congress passes a bill restricting foreign transfer of next-generation TSF production technology.[67]
  • The Vancouver Pact under the United Nations enters into force. Believing the rapid expansion of BETA territory to be a result of lack of unity in the war, under a UN Security Council Resolution the war against the BETA including Hive capture operations would be conducted under UN leadership. It also stipulates matters such as participating countries' right of belligerency against BETA to be limited to self-defence as well as collective defence and granting UN management/control over captured/seized articles.
  • Poland falls to the BETA assault.

1980: The Oder-Neisse Defence Line successfully stalls the BETA advance.

  • Once the European Union Force is established the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Italy, and other European NATO nations, agree to the ECTSF (European Combat Tactical Surface Fighter) Program, a joint development plan for a next-generation TSF. With the goal of practical implementation in 1985, collaborative development between the nations begins.[68]
  • In light of the current situation in Europe and Asia, the United Nations begins mediating negotiations with nations located away from the front lines, to have them accept national governments and refugees from frontline regions.[69]
  • The Soviet Union first deploys the MiG-23 Cheburashka, the nation's first true domestically-designed TSF. Developed separately from the MiG-21, its capabilities are equal to that of a quasi-2nd generation TSF; however, its poor serviceability and operational rates did not improve, prompting the Soviet government to begin work on an improved model.[71] Units that were already deployed were given hasty repairs and modifications, and offered to Asian and African nations at a low price as a means for the Soviet government to preserve its influence with them.[71]
  • The USA begins the LWTSF (Lightweight Tactical Surface Fighter) Program. As part of research into Tactical Surface Fighters for close combat, technological demonstration of smaller and lightweight craft with high mobility, begins.[72] Under this plan, the YF-16 and YF-17 were developed by General Dynomics and Northrock, respectively. Though there are initially no plans to make it an official project, the appearance of the High-Low Mix concept in the future would elevate the technology demonstration into a development program for combat-capable units.[72]
  • Taking into account the attrition rate on the European and Asian fronts, the Imperial Diet of Japan decides to reorganize and reinforce its military forces. Japan reintroduces its Military Service Law, previously abolished at the end of WWII. Conscription of a portion of the male populace, above 20 and under 40 years of age, is re-introduced as a result.[73]

1981: BETA invasion of the Nordic region beings in full force.

  • BETA invade the Nordic region. Weakened by the major BETA offensive of 1978, the Sino-Soviet and European Union allied forces retreat to the last bastion in Northern Europe, the Scandinavian Peninsula. The Scandinavian front would continue to intensify and last for over a decade.
  • The BETA group that invaded the Scandinavian Peninsula begins construction of H08 (Rovaniemi Hive), in Finland.[74]
  • Operation Dunkirk begins in Europe. With the BETA advance into Western Europe, the European nations evacuate their civilians and civilization to Africa, South America, and South-east Asia. This would continue until 1984.
  • Japan first deploys the A-6J Wadatsumi and its tender submarine, the Type-81. They are deployed to military bases mainly in western Japan and around the shorelines of the Sea of Japan.[75]
  • L1 early nuclear attack platform Space One is completed, and SHADOW begins partial operation.[76]
  • France first deploys the Mirage 2000. The TSF is a 1.5th-generation unit produced by Dass-Ault via independent modification of the Mirage III, with a 15% increase in frame size to accommodate features for increased armament loads and operational time. Subsequent modifications would upgrade the unit to a 2nd-generation TSF.[76]
  • The United States of America begins the ATDP Program (note: possibly Advanced Technology Demonstration Program?) by DARPA, the US Army, and NASA, to explore and establish leading experimental technologies for the third generation of Tactical Surface Fighters.[77] The X-29 experimental TSF, produced by Grunnan, re-uses components from other TSFs in order to save on development costs and accelerate the program schedule to begin early testing.[77]

  • The United States Congress approves a 50-year lease of Alaska to the Soviet Union, and transfer of local residents begins even as preparations for relocation commence in various parts of the Soviet Union. At the same time, as a measure of military insurance, Yukon Base and the surrounding area spanning the US-Soviet border is leased to the United Nations free of charge for the next 50 years.[78]
  • In light of the setbacks encountered during the purely domestic development of the Type-82, an integrated public and private sector development of a domestic next-generation Tactical Surface Fighter begins in Japan, in order to close the technology gap with the United States.[80]
  • The USA begins deployment of the carrier-capable F-14 Tomcat developed by Grunnan, a long-ranged strike unit capable of utilizing the Phoenix missile; nevertheless, the TSF has more than enough capability for close-range melee combat.[81] Deployment of true 2nd generation Tactical Surface Fighters begins.
  • The United Kingdom first deploys the F-5E ADV Tornado, an enhanced area defence version of the F-5, designed to perform on par with early 2nd generation TSFs.

Angry angry anett

NVA MiG-21.

  • Operation Neptune takes place in Europe. A large 4-way joint counteroffensive operation by UN forces, the United States Armed Forces, European Union forces, and Warsaw Pact forces is enacted to lure out and destroy the BETA in Poland and improve the military situation in Europe. Total military strength invested is 300 warships, 500 TSFs, 400 helicopters, and over 300,000 troops. (In comparison, Operation Palaiologos involved over 1,000,000 troops and over 20,000 fighting vehicles stretching across the horizon)
  • June - July: The events of Schwarzesmarken's epilogue occur.
  • July - August: The Oder-Neisse line falls and Eastern Germany is annihilated by the BETA.
  • September: Events of TSFiA 39 "Bake the Enemies" transpire. The BETA begin their offense on Western Germany, threatening the town of Hamburg. A joint American-West German task force barely holds them back long enough for the civilians to evacuate.
  • With the westward BETA advance from Kashgar, Western Europe becomes the main battlefield. Despite European military defenses making full use of the rivers to delay the BETA advance, the struggle is in vain. Berlin falls.
  • The United States begins the ATSF (Advanced Tactical Surface Fighter) Program, in order to develop a next-generation Tactical Surface Fighter in preparation for the world after the end of the BETA War.[82]
  • Despite US assistance and the efforts of the European Union Force, western Europe is now a battlefield. The European Union head institutions are moved from Brussels to London as a temporary measure until headquarters in Belfast are complete.[83]
  • Shocked by the USA's ATSF Program, the Japanese domestic next-generation Tactical Surface Fighter research and development group established earlier shifts plans to aim to develop a third generation TSF. The development project is restarted as the Youkou Program.[84]

  • Construction of H09, the Anbar Hive, begins in Iraq. As a result, there is a forced large-scale withdrawal from the Middle Eastern front, along with a serious shortage of oil resources.[86]
  • Construction of H10, the Noginsk Hive, begins in Russia.[87]

1984: The fall of the Oder-Neisse Defence Line allows the BETA access Western Europe, and at the same time India is invaded.

  • The BETA begin an all-out southward push. A large BETA group from Kashgar circumvents the Himalayas to invade the Indian subcontinent. The armies of the Indian subcontinent nations that had been invaded from the direction of the Middle East hold out against the BETA for over ten years while maintaining close cooperation with South-East Asian nations shielded by the Himalayas.[88] However, the resource advantages of the BETA would eventually overwhelm the defenders, resulting in the military forces of the Indian subcontinent retreating and relocating their joint HQ to Sri Lanka to continue their defensive battles from there.[88]
  • Scrutinizing the experimental data from successive Alternative Plans, Professor Kiriyama of the Imperial University hypothesizes that: "Based on the fact that the BETA show stronger reactions to computers than humans, communication by carbon-based lifeforms is impossible". A thesis concerning non-carbon-based pseudo-life forms is put together.[90]
  • The Imperial government's growing trepidation with the worsening situation in Europe prompts them to decide on using Professor Kiriyama's thesis as a lure for the next Alternative Plan, in order to have the United Nations station military troops within Japan as defensive battle strength. National expenditures begin for fundamental research into non-carbon based pseudo-lifeforms.[90]
  • The United States first deploys the McDaell Doglam F-15C Eagle. Developed as a successor to the F-4 Phantom, it is adopted all over the world as an all-purpose 2nd-generation Tactical Surface Fighter, boasting of both range and high anti-BETA combat performance.[91]
  • Operation of SHADOW begins. The ARTMISS final defence line, comprised of the nuclear strike satellites around Earth's orbit, is complete. Its purpose is to deal with situations whereby the Lagrange 1 early stage nuclear launch platform "Space One" is unable to change the trajectory of its target.[92]

1985: The BETA advance across Europe is now progressing unchecked.

  • Construction of H11 (Budapest Hive) begins in Hungary. As a result, the BETA invasion on the European front gains momentum.[93]
  • The Empire of Japan forms an economic agreement with the Oceanian nations. The Imperial government, judging it inevitable that western Japan will eventually become a battlefield, decides to establish new overseas production bases for major domestic industries, various heavy industries, manufacturing industries, and so on. Industrial plants are constructed one after another in Oceanian nations such as Australia and New Zealand.[94]
  • The Soviet Union's relocation of state functions to Alaska, which had began in 1982, is completed.[95] The headquarters of Alternative III is moved from Khabarovsk to Talkeetna, Alaska.[96] The evacuation and relocation was first completed for government facilities and military installations, followed by key industries, various manufacturing infrastructures, and then the majority of ethnic Russians. The Bering Sea is interposed as an absolute defense line in-between Soviet Alaska and the Russian Far East, and Soviet forces continue their battles against the BETA in an attempt to regain lost territory.[95]
  • Japanese and British defence industry contractors initiate frequent contact with each other using under-the-table channels.[98]
  • France strongly insists on the use of French-manufactured engines for the ECTSF.

1986: BETA subjugation of the European continent is almost complete.

  • Construction of H12 (Lyons Hive) begins in France. Following the invasion of the British mainland, the BETA begin their invasion of the Iberian Peninsula.[99]
  • In conflict with Britain and West Germany over decisions in the progress of the ECTSF Program, France withdraws from the project.[100]
  • The United States first deploys the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The 2nd-generation TSF was developed by General Dynomics after the technical research-purpose LWTSF Program was elevated to actual combat machine development status, as part of the "High-Low Mix" concept was conceived as a countermeasure to the rising cost of F-14 and F-15 procurement. The F-16 is adopted by many nations as a lightweight TSF to succeed the F-5E.[101]
  • The People's Republic of China and Taiwan sign a pact to form a common front against the BETA, forming the Unified Front of China.[102]
  • In light of the front line drawing closer to the mainland of Japan, the Imperial Forces GHQ establishes a dedicated full-time domestically-deployed fighting force directly under their command, the Mainland Defence Force. The Imperial Forces is re-structured, with the strategic objective being to defend the Japanese homeland to the death.[103]
  • August 18: To select its next mainline Tactical Surface Fighter, Japan carries out joint exercises with the United States. Dissimilar Air Combat Training is conducted at the Yausubetsu Training Area.[104] During this exercise, Captain Iwaya Eiji of the Imperial Royal Guard accomplishes the brilliant feat of bringing down an F-15C Eagle in an F-4J Kai Zuikaku.[104][105]
  • Disappointed by the substantial delays in the ECTSF program, West Germany suggests its withdrawal from the program. In reply to the hard selling of the F-15 and F-16 by the USA, West Germany begins to consider bringing in the F-15.[106]
  • The 2nd-generation JA-37 Viggen, developed by SAAG using the J-35 Draken as a base, enters deployment with Sweden.[107]

1987: The BETA advance continues on all fronts.

  • Unable to resist the full-scale westward BETA advance, the governments of various nations holding out in Portuguese territory, in order to support refugees escaping from the European continent, relocate their capital functions to the United Kingdom, Greenland, and Canada. Military forces belonging to nations that have lost their territories are henceforth incorporated under UN command.[107]
  • With the decline in national power of the permanent member nations of China, the Soviet Union, and France of the UN Security Council, Japan, which held great influence in technology, economic, and military matters, and Australia, with its immense national influence due to its provision of a stable food supply, are inducted as new additions to the list of permanent members of the UN Security Council, bringing the total number of permanent Security Council members to - in addition to the United States of America and the United Kingdom - seven nations. However, the right of vote for Japan and Australia is frozen for the next 20 years (until 2007).[108]
  • July: The controlled Fifth Dimensional Effect Bomb experimental detonation, the Morpheus Experiment, which was carried out in the White Sands Desert, New Mexico, United States, is successful.[109] This paves the way for practical implementation of G-bombs.
  • November: The HI-MAERF Project is discontinued due to technological issues, and the prospect of the implementation of the cheaper and more practical G-bombs, for which the limited quantities of BETA-produced elements would be put to better use in.[110]
  • In light of the worsening war situation on the Indian subcontinent, Japan begins considering dispatching troops that had previously been requested by the United Nations. Dredging of Lake Biwa Canal begins for the re-servicing of the Lake Biwa canal.[111] The canal is expanded to connect Osaka Bay, Ise Bay, and Tsuruga Bay together via Lake Biwa, as an important traffic route, and to allow passage of the Imperial Navy's Kii-class battleships and 300,000-ton class tankers.[111] Despite incomplete work on the section of canal that connected Tsuruga Bay to the network, the Lake Biwa canal still allowed for the deployment of the USS Theodore Roosevelt TSF carrier during the BETA Invasion of Japan in 1998, and contributed to troop movements during Operation 21st in 2001.[111]
  • Due to France's withdrawal from the ECTSF Program and the loss of the European mainland, the United Kingdom, which had become the only nation left providing substantial development to the development program, announces the shift in the ECTSF's specifications to that of a 3rd-generation Tactical Surface Fighter, with emphasis on close-combat and maneuvering capabilities.[112]

  • Japan completely revises its Fundamental Law of Education to focus on the cultivation of Eishi, completing the changes to the system that were first carried out in 1979. Truncation of compulsory subjects and reorganization of university departments begins.[114]
  • The USA, disappointed in the stagnation of Alternative III, presents their proposal for the next Alternative Plan to the United Nations without waiting for the UN's call for contingency plans for the next Alternative plan.[115] The USA presents an anti-BETA strategy that entails the use of the then-under-research G-Bombs to eradicate Hives; by using limited application of G-bombs to capture the outer Hives, repeating the cycle of acquiring G-elements to mass-produce G-bombs, and finally, using a saturation attack with a large number of G-bombs to purge the Hives in the center of Eurasia, including the Original Hive. The UN, seeing the lack of progress on Alternative III, agrees to consider the USA's proposal.[115]
  • The UN carries out the Triad exercises. UN Joint Space Force and United States Strategic Orbital forces jointly conduct material drop experiments to verify the interception standard of the BETA BETA#Laser-class. Regardless of the contents of the load, only BETA#Heavy Laser-class in the vicinity of the predicted end point intercept the load, and it is found that they do not react beyond a certain fixed range. While the detailed principle behind this behavior remains unknown, this results in a significant boost in regular deployment of low Earth orbit satellites and HSSTs.[116]
  • 14-year-old Kouzuki Yuuko begins examining quantum causality theory.
  • The UN rejects the United States' anti-BETA strategic proposal. Objections by Eurasian nations over the unpredictable effects of the new weapons with regards to the differences in the evaluation of the results of Alternative III is the main reasons for rejection. As a result, the USA is deeply disappointed in the UN, and decides to enforce their own anti-BETA strategy. From then on, the US' open lobbying towards member nations of the UN, and the radicalization of the rejected plan into what would eventually lead to Alternative V, begins.[117]

1989: The BETA begin their advance into East Eurasia and Asia.

  • In response to an object suspected to be a BETA landing unit flying in from the Moon's surface, SHADOW successfully executes its first interception, deflecting the object's Earthbound trajectory. However, there is controversy over whether the object was actually a BETA landing unit or not.[118]
  • The BETA attempt to expand into Africa, even as other large-scale BETA groups invade Europe and the Indian subcontinent. They are met by the forces of the Middle Eastern Union at the Suez Canal Defence Line in a defensive battle, intensifying the fighting on the Arabian Peninsula.[119]
  • June 15: The roughly four month long battle to defend the Suez front begins in North Africa.

1990: The BETA continue their main advance into Asia and East Eurasia.

  • Construction of H13, the Bhopal Hive, begins in India. Following the evacuation of Europe, humanity focuses towards India to prepare for the capture of the Kashgar Hive, and begins a do-or-die resistance in the area.[121]
  • A large BETA group from Kashgar begin an all-out eastward push. Northeast Eurasia, East Asia and Southeast Asia become the main battlefields as the Unified Front of China, Soviet Union, and various Southeast Asian nations wage a furious defensive war, but the frontline is gradually pushed back by the overwhelming numbers of the BETA.[122]
  • The ATSF Program ends. As the result of the four-year development competition between Lockweed's YF-22 and Northrock's YF-23, the USA, which determined the YF-22 to be superior in terms of cost and conformation to existing US tactical doctrine, is selected as the next mainline TSF. After a year of trial operations, it is decided for formal deployment, and given the official designation of F-22A.[123]

  • Judging the eastward BETA advance to be a national crisis for the Empire of Japan, the Imperial Diet decides to dispatch troops to the East Asian frontline. The Imperial Army forms the Continental Expeditionary Force, and sends a large force of armored units with a focus on TSFs to the front. Despite their efforts, however, the frontline continues to be pushed back.[125]
  • With the prior successful detonation of a G-Bomb during the Morpheus Experiment in 1987, work on making the weapon viable for practical usability begins. The US decides to use all of their G-Elements on the production of G-bombs.[126] As a result, there is skepticism over the viability of the F-22A Raptor.
  • A paper by a 17-year old student on her own original theory "Quantum Causality Theory" catches the eye of the Alternative Plan bid committee. To hasten fundamental research on the next plan, she is admitted to the Imperial University's Applied Quantum Physics Laboratory; from then on, together with Professor Kiriyama, they pursue research on the theory testing of what would later become the 00 Unit.[127]
  • With procurement of the F-22A Raptor running into difficulties, the USA begins the DRTSF (Dual-Role Tactical Surface Fighter) Program to modernize and improve existing TSFs to make up for gaps and shortages until the next mainline fighter is deployed. The McDaell Doglam-proposed F-15E and the General Dynomics-proposed F-16XL are both submitted for the plan. With superior armament payload, adaptability to future upgrades, and procurement costs, the F-15E is officially adopted.[128]

  • Construction of H14, the Dunhuang Hive, begins in China. At around the same time, construction of H15, the Krasnoyarsk Hive, begins in Russia. The sudden eastwards advance of the BETA elevates the sense of impending crisis in the Far East.[129]
  • Operation Swaraj: A counteroffensive operation in the Indian subcontinent, Operation Swaraj, is set in motion to capture the Bhopal Hive and restore control of the Indian subcontinent to humanity. Under United Nations leadership, the African Union and Southeast Asian nations launch a massive assault. Space forces participate in orbital bombardment and orbital troop deployment; these are thereafter established as a tactical strategy of Hive capture operations.[130]
  • Operation Swaraj: During the operation, Special Reconnaissance Force A-01, under the direct command of Alternative III, enters live combat to infiltrates the Hive Stab of the Bhopal Hive. Attempts at gathering intelligence via reading bear no results, and almost all of their participants are annihilated. After Operation Swaraj, SRF A-01 would continue small-scale reconnaissance missions by taking advantage of any ongoing culling operations to break into enemy territory accruing numerous sacrifices in the Alternative Plan TSF unit.[130]
  • The Asuka Program begins in Japan. Riding alongside the Ministry of Defense's Youkou Program, the Imperial Household Department begins the program to develop the successor to the Type-82/F-4J Kai Zuikaku as the Imperial Royal Guard's next mainline TSF.[131]
  • A large BETA group from the Dunhuang Hive begins advancing towards the South China Sea. The Unified Front of China, the Imperial Japanese Continental Expeditionary Force, and Korean and Vietnamese volunteer armies build a defense line at the Jialing River, flowing north of Chongqing. Though all forces fight hard, exhausted from conducting delaying operations the previous year, the front collapses at the dawn of the new year. Until the refugees have evacuated, the rear guard under the Continental Expeditionary Force Northern Region 7th Division, 71st Tactical Armor Wing, 2nd Tactical Armored Battalion defends them to the last.
  • The Soviet Union first deploys the Su-27 Zhuravlik. Despite being a 2nd-generation machine developed using the F-14 Tomcat's technical data, supplied to Sufoni by Grunnan, troubles with the initial model make it unpopular with many pilots. Afterwards, procurement is swiftly terminated with the introduction of the improved Su-37 Terminator.[132]

1993: BETA advance into South-East Asia.

Time for some QTE

F-4Js surrounded during Operation 6-9.

  • BETA gain total control over the European continent. With the collapse of the Northern European front that had continued to resist to the end, the European Union GHQ declares a complete withdrawal of all forces and the abandonment of Europe. After this, the European nations establish forward bases on the islands off the coast of the continent, so as to continue culling operations in preparation for a future campaign to reclaim Eurasia.[133]
  • Construction of H16, the Chongqing Hive, begins in China. Despite a fierce defensive action mounted by the Unified Front of China and the Imperial Japanese Continental Expeditionary Force, the fierce assault of the oncoming BETA forced them into a retreat.[134]
  • Operation 9-6: An ambush operation by allied Chinese and Korean forces to annihilate a large BETA group heading towards Dalian, China, at the coast near the Korean border, is carried out. Although the Imperial Japanese Continental Expeditionary Force participates by supporting from the flank, two battalions are destroyed in a surprise BETA attack. Afterwards, the invasion of Dalian is avoided by the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons; the main force of the Imperial Army is forced to temporarily withdraw to the riverbank at Harbin. The losses taken during this operation, however, are enough to further weaken the frontline.[135]
  • Operation 9-6: A 19-year-old Jinguuji Marimo survives the BETA ambush on the Expeditionary Force.

1994: The BETA invade China from the west and south.

  • The BETA group proceeding south from Kashgar gains complete control of the Indian subcontinent. As a result, the eastward BETA momentum increases, and the Unified Front of China is caught in an inescapable dire situation. The armed forces from nations that had lost their territory to the BETA are later incorporated under UN military command.[136]
  • The Imperial Diet of Japan, backed by the previously-revised Military Service Law, passes a bill to lower conscription age. Mobilization of student volunteer soldiers restricted to duties in the rear begins, the reason being the increasing number of years the BETA War was dragging out to be.[137]
  • The United Nations calls for preliminary plans for Alternative IV, in order to replace the stagnated Alternative III. Japan, Canada and Australia announce their candidacy for the bid to host the 4th Alternative Plan. Each nation begins preparation for the required personnel and equipment, working to secure the bid in order to increase their international presence.[138] The bidding race grows into a political issue between the UN Security Council permanent members; Japan, in particular, locks horns with Chinese and Soviet misgivings over having an Imperial Japanese-headed Alternative IV, as well as with the USA's own political goals. In turn, Japan is backed by Canada, Australia, and an Australia-supported UK in her efforts to win the bid to host Alternative IV.[139]
  • The 20-year-old Kouzuki Yuuko, invited by the UN, advances the verification of quantum causality theory.
  • February: In Japan, the much-desired, purely domestically-developed Type-94 Shiranui, developed by the three companies of Fugaku, Mitsuhishi, and Kawazaki, by utilizing the data from licensed-production of the Type-89 Kagerou, is finally deployed in combat for the first time. The first TSF to boast of a high level of performance conforming to 3rd generation TSF standards, strict adherence to the design used would resulted in meager adaptability for future modification plans, leading to complications in its upgrade plans in later years.[140]
  • The ECTSF tech demonstrator machine, the ESFP (Experimental Surface Fighter Program) prototype, is finally completed by British Aerospace, after a long process of independent development by the UK. Control of the ESFP is transferred to the Euro Fightas, and the Rain Dancers Squadron, with the backing of the British government, is dispatched to the UN's European force, with the aim of appealing to various European nations via a demonstration of its capabilities in live combat.[141]
  • The United States first deploys the F-18E/F Super Hornet, a high-performance all-rounder upgrade of the F-18 Hornet. With the completion and deployment of a unit with such an excellent cost-performance ratio, the retirement of the F-14 Tomcat, which until then had continued to defend its absolute position as the Navy's mainline TSF, would begin to be pursued.[142]
  • The Unified Front of China first deploys the J-10. A 2nd-generation machine covertly joint-developed by Shengdu and IEI, based on the F-16C, it would later becomes the most successful F-16-derived TSF.[143]
  • The Soviet Union first deploys the MiG-29 Lastochka. Developed by the Mikoyam Guluvich Design Bureau, it is a high-performance TSF, said to be the culmination of Soviet 2nd-generation machines, with mobility and close-combat capabilities pushed to their limits. However, the MiG-29 did not flourish in domestic procurement, and a lifeline for the TSF is sought overseas.[144]

  • Construction begins on H17, the Mandalay Hive, in the Burmese territory of Mandalay. In response, the UN, along with the South-East Asian nations, begin construction on the Malaysian Peninsula Defence Line, as well as a final defence line at the Kula Gulf of Solomon Islands.[145]
  • The UN, after scrutiny of proposals by candidate nations, decides to adopt the Japanese plan for Alternative IV as a replacement for the stagnated Alternative III when the research of Dr. Kouzuki Yuuko of the Imperial University catches their eye.[146] Japan's proposal is adopted and elevated in status to the Fourth Alternative Plan without a preparatory period, with data produced by similar plans in the past immediately requisitioned for the Alternative Plan, while Dr. Yuuko is immediately sworn in as the plan's chief supervisor. Establishment of the Alternative IV HQ could not be done in time for the sudden decision, and a in-name only headquarters is set up at the Imperial University's Applied Quantum Physics Research Facility. Meanwhile, in opposition to Alternative IV, the USA continued their coercive lobbying for the revival of their own anti-BETA plan.[146]
  • The United States and her Alternative V allies begin the infrastructure construction in space for the purposes of completing their colony ship backup plan to Alternative IV.
  • Work on the 00 Unit by both Alternative IV chief supervisor Kouzuki Yuuko and Professor Kiriyama of the Imperial University begins. In order to set up the 00 Unit's candidate selection pool, the 207th Training School is established at the Imperial Army's Hakuryou Base, under the direct control of Alternative IV. Outwardly, the 207th would be presented as any other training school.[147]
  • With Japan's selection as the host nation of Alternative IV, more Imperial Army facilities are opened up to units of the UN military's Far East Force called upon by the plan. Hakuryou Base is one of them; units of the UN Pacific 11th Force are also stationed bases in Kadena, Iwakuni, Misawa, Chitose, and other locations.[148]
  • The UN starts the Blue Book Program, the goals of which partially align with those of the Alternative Plans.[149]
  • As part of the revision of their Military Service Law, Japan passes an amendment to extend the conscription effort to include unmarried women over the age of 18.[150]
  • The Soviet Union begins the ПЗ (Total Eclipse) Plan, their own anti-BETA initiative to recapture their national territory. Due to the very small size of the plan and its research, little is known about it to others.[151]
  • The UN Statistics Division announces that the world population has fallen to approximately 50% of the pre-BETA Wars figure. However, it is also noted that the rate of decline had vastly fallen compared to the 30% worldwide casualty rate immediately after the first year of the BETA War; the introduction of TSFs, which allowed military forces to check against the intensification of destruction wrought by the BETA, was attributed as a reason.[152]
  • The USA, throughout the bidding process for Alternative IV and even after, continues to pressure the UN into ceasing operations for Alternative IV prematurely, and reviving their own anti-BETA strategy as Alternative V. Measure taken include suggestions from the USA that they would consider withdrawing US troops from the UN's low-orbit space fleet and from the orbital defense network if the UN did not acquiesce.[153]
  • The United States of America first deploys the modernized version of the F-15C Eagle, the F-15E Strike Eagle. This is in part due to a shift in focus from the production of 3rd-generation TSFs into updating 2nd-generation designs to keep them relevant in the frontline role.[154]
  • Yashiro Kasumi, a man-made 6th-generation esper produced during the final hours of Alternative III, is requisitioned and transferred to Alternative IV at the same time alongside other resources. Her powerful reading ability would later provide a great contribution to Alternative IV.[155]
  • Soldier-class BETA, the smallest BETA strain to be encountered, are first confirmed after studying several specimens of the species.[156]

1996: The BETA continue their relentless push into China.

  • The construction of H18, the Ulan Bator Hive, in Mongolian territory, begins.[157]
  • Asian nations that have become part of the war zones appeal to Australia, and other nations in Oceania for assistance, and the relocation of their state functions begin. However, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore continued their defence to maintain their own territories.[158] As of 2001, Malaysia and Singapore are still largely in control of their regions.
  • The Consolidation of Southeast Asian Nations, COSEAN, is established by the many South-East Asian countries that have lost their territories to facilitate indirect cooperation with the UN. Their objection to being incorporated into direct UN control is due to distrust from being forced to participate in Operation Swaraj for the sake of Alternative III's goals.[159]
  • Allegiance, an armed right-wing Christian group, rapidly expands, especially through their popularity with disfranchised youths in refugee camps, increasing related protests and demonstration activities. Their religious doctrine is one that regards the BETA as a God-given test of humanity, and the possible destruction of humanity as merely the carrying out of God's will, going as far as to begin to oppose anti-BETA efforts.[160]
  • As an insurance measure in response to unease over the UN's forced status elevation of the Japanese-formulated Alternative IV, and its excessively absurd contents, the United States proposes the call for a fifth, backup plan. With the backing of South American and African nations, it is approved.[161]
  • The Eurasian nations, opposing the USA's attempt to reintroduce its G-Bomb-centric plan as a backup for Alternative V, and equally concerned with what they saw as a preposterous vision for Alternative IV, presented a counter-proposal to the UN in the form of a development project for advanced TSF technology, Project PROMINENCE. The plan would be approved, and its HQ set up in the UN-administered Yukon Base in Alaska. Work begins on expanding Yukon Base for the project.[162]
  • The Channel Archipelago Base Group established under the jurisdiction of the UK is transferred to the EU Force, and renamed the Mont Saint-Michel Fortress. The actual fortress, implemented as an outpost for the recapture of the European continent, also contains European historical heritage left behind by the various cultures of Europe. The fortress is designated by the UN and EUF as an important location equaling the UK-based Dover Base Group.[157]
  • The Imperial Diet of Japan passes an amendment further lowering the male draft age. This results in a de facto full mobilization of students.[163]
  • Starting with Kitakyushu, a type-2 evacuation advisory is announced throughout all of Kyushu.
  • The Unified Front of China begins licensed-production of the Su-27-based J-11.[164]
  • Sweden deploys Europe's first 3rd-generation Tactical Surface Fighter, the JAS-39 Gripen.[165]

  • The Arabian Peninsula front that had withstood the BETA invasion for over ten years collapses. The African Union and Middle East Coalition forces retreat to beyond the Suez Canal to rebuild the frontline, and barely hold back the invasion of the African continent.[166]
  • Europe and the United States of America receive a signal from the Daedalus Project's Icarus I probe. Rough data analysis reveals a terrestrial exoplanet of AA-grade habitability in the Barnard's Star system in the constellation of Ophiuchus. As a detailed analysis would take several months, the USA, taking the Eurasian nations into account, proposes an amendment to the next Alternative Plan to includes colonizing the planet. Pointing out the excessively good timing of this news, some call it a hoax for the USA to push their own Alternative proposal through.[167]

Colony ship under construction.

  • The plan to construct large spaceships at a Lagrange point under Alternative V begins. The reality of two Alternative Plans existing side by side could be called an abnormal situation. This matter becomes the turning point that makes clear the difference in the anti-BETA strategy of the Oceanian and Eurasian nations and Canada, and the pro-American African and South American nations.
  • The special task force under the direct control of the Alternative Plans, Special Task Force A-01, is established. The unit, regiment-sized during its commissioning, draws its personnel from the 207th Training School under the coverage of Alternative IV, and is completely independent of the UN Force chain of command, being responsible only for the tasks required of Alternative IV.[169]
  • The Communist Party of the People's Republic of China makes the decision to temporarily retreat from the Chinese mainland due to the BETA advance. The Taiwanese government announces that the PRC government's official functions would be housed in the Presidential Office Building of Taiwan.[170]
  • The Empire of Japan's Type-97 Fubuki, initially put together during the development of the Type-94 Shiranui as a testbed for 3rd-generation technology development, is manufactured and deployed as a high-performance training TSF. The unit would later be elevated to that of a replacement candidate for the ageing F-4J Gekishin.[171]
  • The Soviet Union, exasperated at the unreliability of the Su-27, sets their sights on the Su-27M2 variant, independently developed by the Sufoni Design Bureau. It is quickly reworked into the Su-37 Terminator, and the unit is pressed into service soon after.[172]
  • Brazil and Australia began to accept refugees from People Republic of China.

  • January: Japanese forces participate in the Gwangju Operation, in concert with the Unified Front of China, to support UN and COSEAN forces in their withdrawal from the Korean peninsula. The Lieutenant-General Ayamine Incident occurs, referred to as the "tragedy of the Gwangju Operation"; under Lieutenant-General Ayamine Shuukaku, Japanese forces were prioritized towards saving local citizens who had been denied refuge by COSEAN, and the redirection of combat forces resulted in the destruction of the UN HQ for the operation area, as well as heavy losses for the UN Forces.[173]
  • After the operation, the UN demanded that Lieutenant-General Ayamine be handed over to them for an international military tribunal. Caught between opposition from the Imperial Japanese forces defending the Lieutenant-General's actions, and the threat of UN support being withdrawn from Alternative IV, Imperial Japanese Prime Minister Sakaki Kurechika was forced to prioritize the nation's international standing over domestic support of Shuukaku's actions, who would, under international trial, be convicted of desertion under enemy fire during the Gwangju Operation. This chain of events would eventually form the basis for the 12/5 Incident.[173]
  • July: BETA proceeding east from the Chongqing Hive make landfall in Japanese territory, beginning the BETA Invasion of Japan. Landing on the west coast of the Sea of Japan, beginning with Kitakyushu, in just one week they invade the Kyushu and Chuugoku, resulting in 36 million victims. The IJMDF Western Group is caught in-between the Kyuushu group and scattered landings of additional BETA groups on the western shores of Chugoku, and are annihilated in a strategic BETA pincer attack. Shikoku is later given up by the defending forces, as they had counted on the timely re-positioning of flanking reinforcements to annihilate the incoming BETA group there. A large part of the failure to repel the invasion is attributed to the super-sized typhoon that struck the region during the initial week of invasion, caused by climate changes as a result of BETA activities on mainland Asia/Eurasia; this prevented the deployment of naval forces in any significant capacity and contributed to the lack of response to the invasion. [174]
  • The BETA advance is halted in central Honshu; the Defence of Kyoto begins. A month-long defensive battle takes place, pitting the Imperial Japanese/US garrison/UN forces against the oncoming BETA just in front of Kyoto.[175]
  • August 10: Kyoto falls at the end of a fierce one-month long defense. The capital is moved from Kyoto to Tokyo.
  • The BETA group that had invaded Japan resurfaces around Sadogashima and begin the construction of H21, the Sadogashima Hive. By this time, 30%(36 million) of the Japanese population had been wiped out. Evacuation directives are issued for the Kinki and Tokai regions; a mass movement of 25 million people begins[176](a portion migrate to Australia).
  • September: The in-depth analysis of data from Ikaros 1 is completed, confirming the existence of the AA-class exoplanet in the Bernard Star System. The US government increases their pressure on the UN for the transition of the Alternative Plans to Alternative V; it was assumed that once support had been secured for Alt. V, the cycle of Hive assault with G-Bombs and G-Element acquisition to repeat the process would eventually give them a monopoly on G-Elements in Eurasia. At the same time, NASA and the ESA released a joint statement on the failure of the Daedalus Project, as contact with Ikaros 1 had ceased.[177]
  • October: Even as BETA activity stagnates in the region of Nagato, the US armed forces unilaterally break the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan, and withdraw all US forces stationed in Japan; the USA cited a frequent tendency of the Japanese forces to disobey orders as the primary reason. The Imperial Japanese government had vehemently opposed the usage of G-bombs or nuclear weaponry on its territory, citing the decision as taken to avoid the additional loss of pilots in close-combat. UN and Japanese leaders also recognized the treaty-breaking as part of the pressure exerted by the USA to support Alternative V.[178]
  • Alternative IV headquarters relocates to Sendai. Similar measures are carried out for the Hakuryou Base's 207th Training School; they are temporarily housed in the Nerima Garrison, before completing the shift to Sendai as well.[179]
  • The BETA resume their eastward advance, gaining complete control of West Kanto. The IJMDF retreats from Shizuoka to Yamanashi and Saitama to prepare to intercept the BETA advance, but the BETA group mysteriously changes direction just before reaching the imperial capital of Tokyo. The advance stagnates after passing south of the Izu peninsula, and becomes a stalemate at the Tama River. Round-the-clock culling operations continue. An offshoot BETA group gains control of Yokohama, and Hakuyrou Base is destroyed.[180]
  • Reconnaissance satellite intelligence confirms the construction of H22, the Yokohama Hive, and its unprecedented rapid growth.[181]
  • In light of the loss of West Kanto to the BETA and the construction of the Yokohama Hive, the Imperial Japanese government prepares to relocate from Tokyo to the secondary capital of Sendai.[182]
  • UN Joint Military Command decides on the basic strategy of enclosing the BETA on the Eurasian continent from the Kamchatka-Japan-Taiwan-Philippines to Africa-England defense lines.
  • Dr. Kouzuki Yuuko proposes, to the United Nations, an operation to capture the Yokohama Hive, as the only way to obtain more G-Elements and achieve progress on Alternative IV. Her proposal coincided with Imperial strategic thinking, having learned from Sadogashima, that the Hive should be taken as soon as possible while it was still in a developing stage. As a counter against the USA's increasing pressure to transit to Alternative V, approval for the operation is immediately given, and to avoid the influence of the USA in the operation, COSEAN is approached for force participation.[183]
  • The Imperial Diet of Japan passes an amendment to further lower the draft age for women to 16 years old; the amendment was implemented on the same day.[184]
  • The European ESFP is officially designated the EF-2000 Typhoon; pre-production models are first delivered to testing units in the UK.[186]
  • France first deploys their independently-developed 3rd-generation Tactical Surface Fighter, the Rafale.[187]

  • The BETA begin construction of H23, the Olyokminsk Hive, and H24, the Khatanga Hive, in Soviet territory. At the same time, US commitments to Europe in anti-BETA operations during this period of renewed pressure on the Eastern Front by the BETA results in widespread civilian demonstrations against the USA.[188]
  • August 5: Operation Lucifer, the greatest large-scale counteroffensive operation in Asia, second only to Operation Palaiologos in the entirety of the BETA Wars, begins. The priority objectives are the destruction of the Yokohama Hive and the recovery of Honshu Island.[189] The UN deploys Special Task Force A-01 to secure G-Elements and keep a check on the like-minded US forces.[190]
  • August 6: The USA, with little warning to allied forces, deploys two G-Bombs at the Yokohama Hive, eradicating the surface Hive structure and its surrounding BETA. This is the first successful Hive capture in human history. The remaining BETA begin their retreat towards Asia, suffering heavy losses from UN/COSEAN TSF/naval pursuit forces.[189]
  • August 8: Operation Lucifer officially ends with the capture of the Yokohama Hive. Despite the victory, the G-Bomb deployment further intensifies anti-USA sentiment in the Empire of Japan.[189]
  • Debate over the dangers of the G-Bomb explodes in many countries. Having seen the overwhelming might of the G-bombs firsthand in Operation Lucifer, many Eurasian and some African nations erupt in debate over the threat. In contrast, with actual proof of their power, countries that originally supported the American plan begin to strongly advocate the use of G-bombs. Meanwhile, the Soviet and Eurasian nations refocus their efforts on the recapture of their original territory, and on Project Prominence.[191]
  • To serve as the headquarters of Alternative IV, construction of a UN military base at the site of Yokohama Hive is requested by Dr. Kouzuki Yuuko. The UN immediately approves the plan as a form of opposition against the USA's advocacy of G-Bombs. UN military command would later order the immediate withdrawal of US armed forces from the area at the commencement of construction work.[192]
  • Reconstruction work on defensive systems begins in previously-occupied West Japan, along with the large-scale intake and reception of COSEAN and UN military forces.[193]
  • December: Construction begins on the Yokohama Base. The original Hive structure is left intact to facilitate further research on the BETA.[193]
  • Boening's TSF development division begins the Phoenix Initiative, a low-cost upgrade plan to move the F-15 to 3rd generation standards through mechanical modernization.[195]
  • The United States of America deploys the 3rd-generation amphibious A-12 Avenger.[196]

  • The construction of the Verkhoyansk and Evensk Hives begin in their respective Soviet territories. To halt the BETA invasion of Kamchatka, the Soviets, in conjunction with the UN Far East forces, launch a large-scale counteroffensive operation against the BETA. The Imperial Japanese Navy also participated as part of the UN Far East Fleet in this operation.[197]
  • January: The section of Yokohama Base dedicated to the hosting of Alternative IV is completed; the Alt. IV research institute is moved from the Imperial University into Yokohama Base, along with the 207th Training Unit, which was previously temporarily relocated to the IJA Nerima Garrison.[198]
  • May: The EF-2000 Typhoon is first deployed in actual combat by the British Army and the United Nations European Region military. As part of defensive strategy, the West German Army's Cerberus Battalion is prioritized as the first UN unit to deploy the Typhoon.[199]
  • UN personnel in support of Allegiance release various data as well as photographs of a G-bomb blast epicenter. Arguments and apprehension over the dangers posed by the G-bombs erupt within the United States Congress, which had previously been comprised mainly of Alternative V supporters. Lockweed Mardin, which had fallen behind in TSF development due to the development of G-Bombs, manages to gain influence in Congress, attracting the attention of Alt. V detractors even as it sought to get closer to those with links to Alternative IV.[200]
  • A third movement that supports neither Alternative IV nor V emerges from the groups questioning the viability of Alternative V. This movement, clashing with both groups of Alternative Plan supporters behind the scenes, is wholly opposed to the use of BETA-derived technology, instead placing all their support behind Project Prominence in the hopes of an eventual assault on the Kashgar Hive.[201]
  • The Japan-America Joint Tactical Surface Fighter Development Program, the XFJ Program, the plan to modify the Type-94 Shiranui, is approved by the Imperial Diet, as part of a plan to obtain cutting-edge TSF technology from the USA. With the F-4 approaching the end of its service life, the debate concerning the selection of the next TSF to replace it becomes complicated.[202] An official point of compromise is reached in the adoption of the Japan-America joint development plan proposed by Lieutenant Colonel Iwaya Eiji, using the official stance of joint development to raise the standard of Japanese development technology as a guise for its second purpose, to obtain as many of ㅣ the United States' latest technologies as they can get away with. Meanwhile, in the USA, as a result of Boening's vigorous lobbying, they receive the contract for the XFJ Program, successfully win over the anti-Alternative V faction, and are approved of by Congress.[202]

  • The UN Yokohama Base commences operations. Though only 70% complete, main base functions had achieved more or less 100% operational status, full opening is authorized. Construction of the incomplete sections continue.[204]
  • Dr. Kouzuki Yuuko confers with a delegation, comprised of political and business members, from the pro-Alternative faction in the United States, in order to set up a framework of support for Alternative IV. At the same time, Yoroi Sakon of the Imperial Ministry of Information, Foreign Affairs Section Two, also contacts pro-Alt. IV UN members.[205]
  • March 14: The United States Army begins domestic deployment of the F-22A Raptor.[206]
  • Professor Yuuko and Alternative IV executives put forth a formal request for the requisition of the HI-MAERF project. The transfer of all XG-series units are approved of in US Congress by a small margin, and the transfer of all unit airframes and development staff was made immediate by a presidential order.[207] The transfer of the XG-series to Alternative IV further intensifies the confrontation between UN members supporting either one of the two Alternative Plan factions.[208]
  • September 21: The Yukon Base Incident, a large-scale terrorist attack on the UN Yukon Base in Alaska (later referred to as the "day of infamy") is jointly carried out by the armed paramilitary group Allegiance and the Refugee Liberation Front, the goal of the attack being to force UN, US, and Soviet authorities to capitulate to their demands for non-conditional acceptance of refugees from the frontlines, as well as awarding them the right to vote.[210] US Air Force units were involved in combat against BETA released from the base's research facilities, including Laser-class BETA. The conflict was eventually resolved by a combination of armed resistance from escaped Project Prominence test teams and counter-terror tactics from US/Soviet special forces. The fighting done during the incident was noted to have been the most major armed conflict in the region since the nuclear bombardment of the second Hive landing unit in Athabasca.[210]
  • November 11: The BETA invasion of Niigata was successfully predicted and intercepted. Special Task Force A-01 is involved in a secondary operation to capture live BETA specimens; the operation was a success, but resulted in the loss of 3 members.[212] The 12th and 14th armored division of the IJA's Mainland Defense Force stop the assault at the Chuetsu and Kaetsu Provinces.
  • November 29: The XM3 TSF operating system, making use of new concepts, developed by Kouzuki Yuuko with the aid of Shirogane Takeru, begins demonstration tests at Yokohama Base in absolute secrecy.
  • December 5 to 6: The 12/5 Incident, an attempted coup d'etat by radical members of the Japanese Imperial Army, involving numerous young officers and led by Captain Sagiri Naoya, commences with the assassination of the Prime Minister and several cabinet members. Answering to a formal request from the provisional government in Sendai, UN and US forces were dispatched, in concert with loyalist Japanese forces, with the intention of armed intervention against the coup forces.[213] After the death of Captain Sagiri Naoya, the coup forces swiftly surrender; shortly after, all members of the provisional government resign from their positions. Actions taken by the Shogun in the aftermath of the incident eventually result in strengthened relations between the UN Alternative 4 program and the Japanese government.[213]
  • December 10: Field test of XM3 using the Type 77/F-4JX Gekishin and the Type 97 Fubuki TSFs. Failure of containment apparatus allows BETA specimens being studied to break free during the combat trials; as test units were not armed with live weapons, this causes the deaths of several pilots and other personnel. In the wake of the incident, several high-ranking UN and civil officials in Yokohama Base are reshuffled from the base.[214]

A Type-94 Shiranui of A-01 engaging BETA at Sadogashima.

  • December 25: Operation 21st begins. H21, the Sadogashima Hive (Objective 21), is assaulted by a coalition of Imperial Japanese, COSEAN, and UN forces, and is successfully destroyed along with Sadogashima with the detonation of the XG-70b's Moorcock-Lechte Engine. The 00 Unit succeeds in obtaining data on all BETA Hives currently on Earth.[216] Previously unseen BETA activity occurs, but this is put down to BETA unpredictability in the chaos of the battle.
    • The first part of Muv-Luv Alternative Chronicles Succession and the events of Chicken Divers take place.
    • December 26/27: The second part of Muv-Luv Alternative Chronicles Succession takes place.
  • December 29 to 30: A large BETA group numbering 40 000 individual creatures, survivors from the Sadogashima Hive, emerge from Machida, Tokyo, to attack Yokohama Base.[217] Even further previously unseen BETA activity occurs. The results of this almost causes the destruction of Yokohama Base along with the 00 Unit and incomplete XG-70b and XG-70d. This is narrowly averted at the cost of over 10,000 killed, wounded, or MIA personnel and the effective annihilation of all military forces stationed there.
  • Heavy damage to the base, and the inability to maintain the operability of the 00 Unit as a result, causes Professor Yuuko to make a formal request to UN GHQ to accelerate plans for the recapture of the Original Hive. Approval is obtained from the Alternative V faction with the conditions of allowing US forces to take charge of the capture of the Original Hive's G-element plant, and the immediate transition to Operation Trident should the recapture of the Original Hive fail.[217]

  • January 1: The assault on H01 (the Original Hive) in the Kashgar region of Western China begins. BETA show obvious signs of tactical thinking in ignoring re-entry bombs and prioritising TSFs and re-entry destroyers over falling re-entry shells. The ground forces and almost all of the UN and US Orbital Drop Corps take significant damage, the latter being picked off from the air as they dropped without a heavy metal cloud. The Hive is seized with the use of the XG-70d. The Superior inside, Target A, is destroyed.
  • Winter sometime after January 1st: The epilogue of Owarinaki Natsu, Towa Naru Shirabe takes place.
  • July: East Siberia is retaken.

  • April 10: Operation Sledgehammer, the operation to capture H20 (Cheorwon Hive) on the Korean peninsula, begins. UN and Imperial Japanese forces launch a joint operation to suppress and capture the Hive.
    • The last segment of Muv-Luv Alternative Chronicles Succession occurs.
  • April 12: Cheorwon Hive is subjugated by mankind's forces. This completes the Imperial Japanese strategic goal of neutralizing all threats to the mainland, the Cheorwon Hive being the last of the three Hives, inclusive of the Yokohama and Sadogashima Hives, that directly threaten the Empire of Japan.[218]
  • August: Imperial Japanese and Soviet forces carry out joint search-and-destroy operations against the BETA along the Sakhalin coast.

2005 - 2040's Edit

  • Humanity pushes the BETA out of the solar system, retaking the Moon and Mars.
  • Human made G-Reactors and G-Elements harvested from the BETA has given humanity great prosperity and technological advancement.
  • Several disastrous inter-human wars are fought with pressure from the BETA lifted. These conflicts would not just be over old divisions such as nationalities, religion, or race, but between new ones such as those between Organics, Synthetics, the Genetically Enhanced, and Artificial Life.

2044 Edit

  • With humankind teetering on the edge of annihilation once again from the infighting, an international effort is launched to unify the planet and put an end to these identity conflicts.
  • New wars are waged between those who still held on to these divisions, and those who supported a one world government. Yashiro Kasumi implies that the Master was one of the leaders of that opposition in her speech.

2049 Edit

  • The unification wars come to an end. The flag of United Humankind flies over Earth. There are still pockets of resistance, however.
  • January 1st: Founding Commisioner Yashiro Kasumi gives a speech at the Operation Cherry Blossom Victory Commemoration Plaza honoring those who lost their lives to ensure humanity lived on (specifically the Valkyries, by now enshrined in myth as the Noble Seven), and those who were about to embark on a new operation to a Siliconian world to make contact.
